When Benjamin and I first met there were no ceilings or walls in what is now “Dawson Retreats”. There was no running water, floors, stoves, or heat. I made it clear that I would not get married till I at least had a shower and a bedroom, so by the time March rolled around we had finished the bathroom and the “yellow room”. There still were not ceilings in most of the house and we still had to cook on the wood-burning stove, but we were young and it was an adventure!
When we found out I was pregnant, however, everything changed. Benjamin worked on the house before work, after work, and on weekends. We wanted to have everything done before Lydia arrived. Some called us crazy, but it was the best thing that happened to us. Our marriage grew so much during those insane months of morning sickness, hormones, and lack of sleep. Slowly, the house came together just in time for Lydia to join the family.
Soon after she was born we had the house appraised and found out it was worth a lot more than the market in Hamilton could support. While visiting family down at the Lake of the Ozarks and trying to decide what we wanted to do, we came across some vacation rentals and got the idea to open up our home as a retreat home in Hamilton, MO. The spark was lit and the fuse began burning. Once again, we rushed to furnish and decorate the home (not to mention purchase a home for us to move in to) in time to catch at least some of the summer rush.
We have had so many wonderful and treasured memories in Dawson Retreats; from housing baby goats in the pantry to cooking hash browns on the wood-burning stove. A lot has changed over the past couple years, but the love that we have for the home hasn’t. We have no doubt that if you come visit, you’ll fall in love with it too!
